Meet the new Fair Trade Campaigns Interns – Kelly and Ellen!

Parker Townley February 6, 2013
We’re pleased to welcome two new interns, Kelly Jackson and Ellen Watlington, to the Fair Trade Campaigns team! Kelly and Ellen have been working over the last couple weeks to perform outreach and support for our campaign organizers and develop some exciting content for the Fair Trade Towns USA and Fair Trade Colleges and Universities USA social media pages. Since you may be hearing and speaking with them in the near future we wanted to offer brief introductions!

Kelly Jackson – Grassroots Outreach Intern

Hello, my name is Kelly Jackson and I am the Fair Trade Towns USA Grassroots Outreach Intern.  It has always been my desire to provide assistance through initiatives that help to generate sustainability, growth, and development.  Being a part of this organization will allow me to “pay forward” the opportunities that have been granted to me.  I am excited about working closely with each campaign and helping to forge the principles practiced by Fair Trade Campaigns. My hometown is Pikesville, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore County.  I have been a resident of Northern California for one year.  Since high school I have had a passion for capturing beauty through the lens of a camera.  Outside of photography I enjoy cooking, reading, playing the computer game Bejeweled, listening to jazz, antique shopping, and spending precious time with family and friends.   Fair Trade Campaigns is the type of organization that believes in the importance of teaching the aspects of fishing as opposed to just giving away fish.  I wanted and needed to be affiliated with a like-minded organization and to be a part of a team that is dedicated to serving their mission and purpose.

Ellen Watlington – Social Media Intern

Hello everyone! My name is Ellen Watlington and I am a senior at the University of California, Berkeley. I was raised in San Diego, CA with my parents and two older siblings. I’ve always appreciated and enjoyed every opportunity to travel abroad, but it wasn’t until I arrived at Cal that I cultivated a deep concern and consciousness for the many global injustices and inequities that exist.I will graduate in May with a degree in Development Studies with a concentration in Latin American geography. I am really interested in being a part of changing the industrial agriculture complex perpetuated by the United States and the “developed” world, which, in addition to guidance from my professor, led me to Fair Trade Campaigns. In the future I hope to work with marginalized communities and farmers in South America to achieve sustainable progress on their own terms. Last spring, I was lucky enough to spend a semester studying in Sevilla, Spain where I acquired invaluable skills, including how to travel on a miniscule budget and understanding Spanish spoken with a strong lisp. My other hobbies include attending concerts, playing the guitar, watching my roommates bake and helping them eat the finished product, playing soccer and planning my next trip abroad.
