Be an Agent for Change this World Fair Trade Day!
Celebrate World Fair Trade Day on
May 14 and Be an Agent for Change!
World Fair Trade Day was started in 2001 by the World Fair Trade Organization. It’s a worldwide festival of events celebrating Fair Trade as a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty and exploitation, climate change, and the economic crises that have the greatest impact on the world’s most vulnerable populations.
This year’s World Fair Trade Day theme is “Be an Agent for Change”. Take a look at World Fair Trade Organization’s resources for World Fair Trade Day event ideas here and check out these other ways to get involved:
1. Take the Fair Trade Challenge, from Fair Trade International
This year, Fair Trade International is aiming to reach a record number of cups of Fairtrade coffee drunk in three days to support coffee farmers that are combating the effects of climate change on their farms and livelihoods.
Take the Fair Trade Challenge and register your “coffee break” starting on April 4, here.
2. Celebrate the Women of Fair Trade with Fair Trade USA
Fair Trade USA is celebrating ALL the women of Fair Trade with an exciting FairHer campaign, officially launching on April 25th.
Show your support by sharing these graphics on social media, or customize your own photo with the FairHer badge. Share your badge on social media starting April 25th using #FairHer. Find instructions for customizing your photo here, or send us your picture and we’ll do it for you! Email your photo to Suzi Hiza ([email protected]) by May 6.
Don’t forget to tag your posts with #FairHer and #FTCampaigns!
3. Spread the word with Fair Trade Federation and Global Crafts
The Fair Trade Federation is partnering with Global Crafts on a social media promotion! Global Crafts is printing and distributing a Fair Trade Social Cut Out – it’s a fun way for people to take photos at events and for businesses to change their profile pics on social media. Global Crafts will ship the posters with orders for FREE, now through May.
Tag your posts with #FairTradeDay and #FTCampaigns to join in on the fun!
Also check out Fair Trade Federation’s events calendar to find more World Fair Trade Day celebrations in your area.
4. Host an event!
Set up your own special way to celebrate World Fair Trade and register your event online! Some great ideas would be having a Bake Fair event, tabling on campus or educating your community with a film screening.
We’ll be highlighting your events on the blog next month. Be sure to register your event so we can help you spread the word!
Looking for a great event to host on your campus? Try Fair Trade Your Finals! Tell us about your event by April 11 and receive a kit full of Fair Trade treats. Click here for more info.
5. Attend an event near you
We’re compiling a list of World Fair Trade Day events around the country. Keep an eye on our events page to find an event near you!
- Event Highlight: Fair Trade Chicago will be hosting a two-day World Fair Trade Day festival and market with over 30 locally-owned fair trade businesses. The event will take place at Daley Plaza from 9 AM to 6 PM on Wednesday, May 4, and Thursday, May 5.
We’ll be back soon to share more ways to celebrate World Fair Trade Day.
