Fairtrade International Impact Platform – Global Sales and Production of Fairtrade products in 2023

2023 sales and production of Fairtrade coffee, tea, and cocoa. Does it make sense to GO ORGANIC?

52.6% of Fairtrade coffee was grown organically in 2023, while 70% of the Fairtrade coffee that was actually sold on Fairtrade terms was grown organically. 35% of Fairtrade certified coffee in 2023 was sold on Fairtrade terms (in 2022, this was only 33%). So – farmers who grew organic Fairtrade coffee were more likely to sell on Fairtrade terms than farmers who grew non-organic Fairtrade coffee.

Similarly: 36% of Fairtrade certified cocoa sold on Fairtrade terms in 2023. 8.3% of Fairtrade cocoa was grown organically in 2023 while 10% of the Fairtrade cocoa that was actually sold on Fairtrade terms was grown organically. So – farmers who grew organic Fairtrade cocoa were more likely to sell on Fairtrade terms than farmers who grew non-organic Fairtrade cocoa.

ONLY 4% of Fairtrade certified tea (black, green, or white) sold on Fairtrade terms in 2023. 6.9% of Fairtrade tea was grown organically in 2023, while 40% of the Fairtrade tea that was actually sold on Fairtrade terms was grown organically. Thus, farmers who grew organic Fairtrade tea were much more likely to sell on Fairtrade terms than farmers who grew non-organic Fairtrade tea.
